Christmas has lost its religious significance – although sceptics would say it never really had any and its always been a secular celebration – but it has been many decades now since Christmas became the time of year we pray to the great God of retail.
With major London stores such as Harrods and Selfridges putting their Christmas goods on display as early as July it seems that Christmas lasts a great deal longer than it used to. Inevitably, as soon as we see tinsel and glitter our thoughts turn to the gifts we have to buy.
The thought of shopping for Christmas gifts excites some, and leaves others cold. Some people run around at the last minute, dashing madcap from shop to shop in a tizz, grabbing things that probably won't fit or are totally unsuitable. Others will work from a carefully crafted list of Christmas gifts specifically chosen for the intended recipient, ticking off as they go.
One great way of being organised in your Christmas gift buying is to make purchases throughout the year. Finding great sale items can ease the burden on time and budget. Of course, this doesn't always mean you'll get that dream gift or the latest toy sensation but there are plenty of bargains to be had nonetheless. And, don't forget, if you're a fan of Christmas cards, buying them in the January sales is a rather nifty trick.
Of course, the savvy buyer now doesn't leave the house and completes their Christmas shopping online.
